خلال 200 عامٍ لم يجرؤ أحدٌ على الانقضاض على أية سفينةٍ تحمل علمًا أمريكيًا، لكن في عام 2009، تجرأت مجموعة من القراصنة الصوماليين وشنوا الهجوم على سفينة الشحن الأمريكية (ميرسك ألاباما) المحملة بالأسلحة الثقيلة. يُركز الفيلم على شخصية قائد السفينة القبطان ريتشارد فيليبس، وكيف تعامل مع الكارثة. يُطلق الجيش الأمريكي أكبر عملية إنقاذ لإنقاذ طاقم السفينة.
