In 25 episodes, we’re going to learn about geology—the study of Earth’s physical structure and processes. Our host, Sage, will teach you about the geological forces and cycles that shape our planet’s past, present, and future. This content is based on an introductory university-level curriculum. By the end of this course, you should be able to: Trace Earth’s development from its earliest periods to its current structure Understand the forces of plate tectonics and how they shape Earth’s landscape Describe the formation of geologic elements like minerals, rocks, and gems Identify geologic forces and cycles that impact the earth, while dispelling myths about extreme geological hazards Learn what geology reveals about Earth’s distant past and what it can teach us about our current changing climate Explore the geology of other planets within the context of Earth’s unique and common qualities and phenomena Become familiar with different specialities within geology and what different types of geologists do Key texts cited include: Marshak, Stephen. 2021. Earth: Portrait of a Planet, Seventh Edition. Babcock, Loren E. 2009. Gemstones and Precious Metals.

Geology can’t tell us the future, but it can tell us a whole lot about the past. And when it comes to climate change on Earth, there really is nothing new under the sun. In this episode, we’ll talk about one of Earth’s hottest periods – the Paleo-Eocene Thermal Maximum – and what it can tell us about our hot, hot future. Introduction: A Warming Earth 00:00 The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum 00:40 How do we know about the PETM? 01:52 What can the PETM show us about Earth's future? 05:21 Review and Credits 10:22 Sources: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RpwM8ZQPFk_DkzMJjMdtRrNGrJSNJ7FbgmQybSZ2Cqo/edit?tab=t.0 Check out our CC Geology Extracurricular Playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8dPuuaLjXtOmqnkvEtNVOrm0eaIjFjJ7 *** Support us for $5/month on Patreon to keep Crash Course free for everyone forever! https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse Or support us directly: https://complexly.com/support Join our Crash Course email list to get the latest news and highlig

You’ve probably heard about fossil fuels before – the good, the bad, and the super, super ugly. But what you might not know is that fossil fuels only exist because of the power of the Earth. And that same power can also provide us with a different type of energy that might be key to a more sustainable future. In this episode, we’ll dig deep and talk about fossil fuels and geothermal energy. 00:00 Introduction: St. Patrick's Cathedral 00:44 What are fossil fuels and how do they form? 04:20 The problems with fossil fuels 05:38 Geothermal energy 09:27 Review and Credits Sources: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RpwM8ZQPFk_DkzMJjMdtRrNGrJSNJ7FbgmQybSZ2Cqo/edit?tab=t.0 Check out our CC Geology Extracurricular Playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8dPuuaLjXtOmqnkvEtNVOrm0eaIjFjJ7 *** Support us for $5/month on Patreon to keep Crash Course free for everyone forever! https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse Or support us directly: https://complexly.com/support Join our Cr
