South Africa then built a commanding first-innings lead, powered by a magnificent Jacques Kallis innings. Kallis batted for more than six hours, faced 264 balls, scored 149 and added 214 runs with the lower order. South Africa appeared firmly in control. But then England produced one of the great fightbacks. Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss launched an astonishing assault in the second innings, putting together a huge 273-run opening partnership. Both batsmen scored centuries as England transformed a disastrous position into a commanding one. Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones and the rest of England's attack then pushed South Africa to the brink on the final day. With South Africa 183 for 7, England were hunting the remaining wickets and victory appeared within reach. But Shaun Pollock and Nicky de Villiers resisted, the light deteriorated, and eventually the umpires called the players off. England were denied victory by fading light. The match finished as a draw, ending England's incredible run of eight consecutive Test victories — but their unbeaten record in 2004 remained intact. A truly unforgettable Test match packed with collapses, centuries, incredible comebacks and a dramatic final-day finish. #DramaticFinish #ENGvsSA #CricketMax #Highlights #SouthAfricaVsEngland
