He is notable for being the second American to win World Brazilian Jiu-Jujitsu Championships as black belt. He's the only American to ever win the absolute division at Brazil Nationals. Lovato Jr. is also the only American to achieve Grand Slam (winning Euros, Pans, Brasileiros and Worlds in the same year).
