On March 5, 2011, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Canelo Alvarez faced Matthew Hatton for the vacant WBC super welterweight title. This fight marked Canelo’s first world title opportunity at just 20 years old. Canelo landed the cleaner, more effective shots throughout the fight, repeatedly staggering Hatton with sharp combinations. Although he was deducted a point in the seventh round for hitting after the break, it had little impact on the overall outcome. After 12 one-sided rounds, Canelo secured a unanimous decision victory with scores of 119-108, 119-108, and 119-108, claiming his first world title. This win marked the beginning of Canelo’s rise as one of boxing’s biggest stars. Now moving forward Canelo nearing the end of his career has a scheduled matchup with Terence Crawford and has future plans to avenge his loss against Dmitry Bivol.
