The WWF Championship was on the line, and if Bret couldn't win the title then he'd wouldn't be allowed to wrestle in the United States again. Shawn Michaels got added to the match as a special guest referee and if Shawn didn't call the match fairly, then HBK would also not be allowed to wrestle again in America. The end of the SummerSlam match was highly dramatic and it featured one of the WWF / WWE's greatest ever match endings. Also at the event Stone Cold Steve Austin challenged Owen Hart for the Intercontinental Championship. The ending of this match was also highly dramatic with Steve Austin taking a piledriver and being unable to stand up afterwards. The British Bulldog vs Ken Shamrock also takes place at the event, The Godwinns battle The Legion of Doom, and Triple H steps into a steel cage with Mankind.
