On July 2, 2022, Jai Opetaia defeated Mairis Briedis by unanimous decision in a 12-round cruiserweight world title bout for the IBF and The Ring championships at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia. Opetaia controlled long stretches of the fight with movement, speed, and sharp combinations, while Briedis had success in close-range exchanges and tried to slow him down with pressure and counters. Opetaia also suffered a broken jaw during the fight, but still managed to outbox Briedis and win on the scorecards (116–112, 116–112, 115–113).
