I like many was skeptical of the use of CGI. Let me tell you, it's bad. Looks like a mobile game. And yet that is the least of this movie's problems. There really isn't much of a plot to spoil. It's boring. It goes nowhere. It ends super suddenly as if they just stopped caring. The movie has lots of the Ghibli hallmarks: witches, close up food shots, spunky little girl protagonist, a black cat, and so on, but it feels more like a rip off of a Ghibli movie done by somebody who watched half of Kiki's Delivery Service. Extremely skippable and only memorable for how disappointed you'll feel by the end of it.
This movie is to Miyazaki what the anti-Christ is to Christ. It's the anti-Miyazaki. Emotions, story, morals, characters - nothing makes sense. Even the normally-unimpeachable Ghibli visuals are bad; there are shows playing on Disney Junior right now that have better animation than this. Other than the basic seed of the idea, there's nothing redeemable about this movie.
A lot of people love to compare this to previous Ghibli movies when it shouldn't be. It is it's own movie. It's fun and lighthearted and great for kids and adults. The english dub also is done very well since the voice acting lines up with the lip motions very well. It was an upsetting ending, feeling left on a cliffhanger, but otherwise a cute movie. I felt like the ending was a tad rushed, but was content with the ending otherwise.
This movie is pretty much unwatchable due to the awkward and stilted animation. This is an embarrassment to the long history of groundbreaking animation from the Ghibli studio. Pretty much any CGI from YouTube to an indie Switch game puts this movie to sham. Please don't release anymore of this garbage in the future.
I thought I would give it a chance even with all the bad reviews. I thought it was a super cute movie! I enjoyed it a lot. I thought it was visually pleasing too. People are just to critical. It's a great movie.
