The Division of the Humanities held its first Convocation on June 3, 2022, in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel since 2019. The University of Chicago’s 536th Convocation ceremony featured remarks from President Paul Alivisatos and Provost Ka Yee C. Lee, as well as an address from Prof. Wendy Freedman, this year’s faculty speaker. The celebration also included the awarding of four honorary degrees to philosopher Cora Diamond, organic biochemist Katherine H. Freeman, historian Mercedes García-Arenal and astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala. The University also recognized faculty members for excellence in teaching and mentoring. World-renowned cosmologist Wendy Freedman delivered an address, entitled “Our Evolving Universe,” at the University of Chicago’s 536th Convocation ceremony on June 4,2022. Freedman is one of the world’s leading cosmologists; leading the team that made a landmark measurement in 2001 of the Hubble constant—the rate at which the universe is expanding. Author Samira Ahmed, AB’93, MAT’93, spoke at the University of Chicago's Class Day ceremony on June 3, kicking off UChicago’s Convocation weekend. Ahmed is a New York Times bestselling author of several novels for young adults, and the writer of a Ms. Marvel comic book mini-series. Her poetry, essays and short stories have appeared in numerous publications, and she is the co-editor of the forthcoming anthology, Magic Has No Borders. Ahmed also has taught high school English in Chicago and New York City, worked in education nonprofits and served on political campaigns.
