Everyone thought the Karate Kid was completely outmatched. Standing across from him was one of the most intimidating fighters in No Retreat, No Surrender — a fighter built around raw power, kickboxing, physical conditioning, and relentless pressure. At first, Jason Stillwell seemed to have no answer. But this fight wasn't really about who was stronger. It was about what happens when raw power meets adaptability. Van Damme's character relies on strength, reach, athleticism, and intimidation to control the fight. Jason fights differently. Through Jeet Kune Do and Jun Fan Gung Fu, he learns to move, intercept attacks, change rhythm, and stop meeting power with power. And once Jason changes the way he fights, the entire dynamic begins to shift. This is the martial arts lesson hidden inside one of the most memorable fights from No Retreat, No Surrender — strength can dominate a fight, but adaptability can change it.
