Slay the Spire is one of the most influential indie games of all time. The way it came to be made is a testament to the power of friendship and why fun should always come first. When Anthony Giovanetti convinced his old college friend, Casey Yano, to quit his job to make a video game, neither of them knew how big it was going to become. Inspired by card games like Dominion, Hearthstone, and Netrunner, as well as other games such as FTL, the pair created a single-player roguelike deckbuilder that kicked off an entirely new genre. Then, nearly ten years later, they did it again with Slay the Spire 2, creating a co-op experience like no other. This video explores the philosophy that went into designing Slay the Spire - a philosophy that put playtesting and fun at the forefront - and how it shaped one of the most influential indie games of all time.
