In the 1998-1999 college wrestling season, Cael Sanderson (Iowa State) and Paul Jenn (Iowa) faced each other twice at 184 pounds. While Sanderson famously finished his varsity career undefeated at 159-0, Jenn holds the distinction of being the only wrestler to defeat him during his collegiate years, an upset that occurred during Sanderson's redshirt season. Date Event Result Score/Outcome Dec 1998 Northern Iowa Open Paul Jenn def. Cael Sanderson 6-4 Decision Jan 1999 NWCA National Duals Cael Sanderson def. Paul Jenn 10-2 Maj. Dec. The "Trivia" Loss: During the Northern Iowa Open in December 1998, Sanderson was competing unattached as a redshirt freshman. Jenn, also wrestling unattached at the time, trailed early but scored multiple takedowns in the third period to secure a 6-4 victory. Because Sanderson was redshirting, this loss does not count toward his official 159-0 NCAA record. The Rematch: Sanderson avenged the loss just over a month later at the NWCA National Duals in Iowa City, defeating Jenn with a dominant 10-2 major decision. Season Outcomes: Sanderson went on to finish his freshman year 39-0 in official matches, winning the 184-pound NCAA title and becoming the first freshman ever named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler. Paul Jenn placed 4th at the Big Ten Championships that year and qualified for the NCAA Championships. They met again in the 1999-2000 season, where Sanderson won by disqualification after leading 9-1 in the first period.
