Wrestling Bios Presents - Shane Douglas and The Birth of ECW ECW proved to be one of the most groundbreaking and trendsetting wrestling promotions of the 90s. While the WWE and WCW were producing wholesome family entertainment, the Philidelphia based ECW would begin a revolution in wrestling that changed the course of the wrestling business as a whole. ECW started life as the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance. Tod Gordon bought the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance and renamed his new acquisition to Eastern Championship Wrestling. Eastern Championship Wrestling soon found a new head booker in Paul Heyman, and the promotion also became affiliated with the National Wrestling Alliance. When the NWA approached ECW in regards to holding a tournament to crown a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion on ECW Television, it should have been a time to celebrate. Instead, NWA president Dennis Coralluzzo rubbed everyone the wrong way within Eastern Championship Wrestling, from owner Tod Gordon, Head booker Paul Heyman, all the way to Shane Douglas, the man who the NWA booking committee decided would be the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion. In the end, Eastern Championship Wrestling decided to go against tradition and usher in a new era in wrestling.
