في عام 1893 يقرر (جوزيف) الشاب الأيرلندي الفقير الهرب مع (شانون) الفتاة الثرية، والمرتبطان معاً بقصة حب، إلى أمريكا، حتى يستطيعان الزواج، يصلان إلى كاليفورنيا، ويأملان في الحصول على قطعة أرض يتمكنان من خلالها من تحقيق حلمهما، يعملان في أعمال يدوية مجهدة، ويستطيعان توفير مبلغ من المال، ويأملان في شراء الأرض، لكن أصحاب الأعمال يسرقون مدخراتهما، يعثر والد (شانون) عليها، ويرحلها معه إلى أيرلندا ثانية، ويحاول (جوزيف) استعادتها بأي شكل.
