I usually despise Jim Carrey movies but ACE VENTURA PET DETECTIVE was just about bearable so decided to watch the sequel even though I`m a confirmed Carrey hater . The movie gets off to a good start with a spoof on CLIFFHANGER and the following scenes aren`t a million miles removed from RAMBO 3 , and as the action moves to darkest Africa OZ fans will notice the chap who plays Simon Adebisi , ( I can`t be bothered to spell his name ) , alas when the action moves to Africa the problems with this movie also begin with the plot featuring Ace looking for a rare bat becoming more and more obscure with Carrey`s slapstick mannerisms coming more to the fore . I`ve never been a slapstick fan and I find even Mr Laural and Mr Hardy can be hit and miss ( And believe me Carrey doesn`t belong in the same sentence as that legendary duo ) so the more the movie went on the more I found myself disliking it , and by the end credits I absolutely hated ACE VENTURA WHEN NATURE CALLS For Carrey fans only

I didn't think the first movie was any great shakes. Sure, it had Carrey in it, running amok and mugging and mimicking and making every rude sound a kid would learn by eighth grade. But the story just kept getting in the way. That's why "When Nature Calls", in my opinion, is much funnier. The story of securing a sacred bat is neither too intrusive nor annoying and leaves room for gags aplenty. And Carrey.... Well, he enters a slapstick marathon and wins the gold in every event. I swear the man is made of rubber. Some of the jokes are pretty gross (the spitting ritual, the "guano" references, etc.) but why should that come as any surprise? Most comedies gear for that kind of humor anymore and, more or less sophisticated, reach the same common denominator: body fluids is funny, dude. Still, without the fluids and functions, there are still great scenes (Ace's entrance in the dining hall, the monks' reaction to his departure, his behavior at the slide show, his driving habits, his escape from a mechanical rhino) and plenty of opportunities to see Hollywood's most uninhibited comedian use every conceivable part of his body to make us laugh. I laughed. His work is done. When this "Nature" calls, answer it. Nine stars. And remember: do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Sloppy sequel has Jim Carrey returning to his star-making performance as a wacky pet detective. This time around he's overseas in Africa and hired to retrieve a sacred white bat that could cause warfare among rival tribes. Carrey is as loony and outrageously over-the-top as he's ever been, and there are an abundance of gross-out gags, some of which are actually pretty funny, but the story isn't strong enough to sustain the entire film and as a result it runs out of energy pretty early. The film is mostly just an excuse for star Carrey to have a lot of fun, which he seems to be doing, but that doesn't necessarily mean the audience will. **

The only movie ever when the sequel is superior to the original. Masterpiece of Jim Carrey's career. One of my favorite movies ever.
