تدور أحداث الفيلم في إطار درامي مشوق حول هارب من وجه العدالة يُدعى ماد (ماثيو ماكونهي) يعيش في جزيرة نائية مطلة على نهر المسيسيبي، ويحاول صبيان في سن المراهقة يصلان للجزيرة في رحلة بحرية على متن قارب مساعدته على الهروب والعودة لحبيبته.
