Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has announced his readiness to defend his title, with his sights set on fan favorite Dustin Poirier. Despite previous statements about defending his title in March and the UFC’s scheduling conflicts, Makhachev sees an opportunity in Poirier’s recent victory. UFC’s Tight Schedule and Poirier’s Opportunity Following the UFC’s decision to book three top lightweight fights, including Poirier’s impressive win against Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299, Makhachev has chosen Poirier as his next opponent, despite believing that Poirier may not have earned the title shot. Makhachev Wants to Stay Active, Eyes Poirier In a recent interview, Makhachev expressed his desire to remain active and fight three times this year. He sees Poirier, fresh off a knockout win and currently unbooked, as a viable option for a June bout. Timing Over Deserving for Makhachev Makhachev acknowledges that while Poirier might not be the most deserving contender, the timing works in his favor. He is unwilling to wait for the outcomes of other top lightweight matchups and is ready to face Poirier. Makhachev Predicts Victory Over Poirier Despite respecting Poirier’s status as a veteran and legend in the sport, Makhachev confidently predicts that he will finish Poirier, planning to counter Poirier’s guillotine attempt with a submission of his own. “I know Dustin does not deserve the title match, but we have no choice right now.” – Islam Makhachev “I will take him down, he will try the guillotine, and I will take his back and choke him out.” – Islam Makhachev #dustinpoirier vs. #islammakhachev #poiriermakhachev
